Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

Where it all began, the start of a motoring legend the Austin Mini.

The Mini Mark 1 was the first version of the BMC Mini, characterised by its sliding windows, external door hinges, and "moustache" grille. The MK1 was produced between '59 and '67. It had front-wheel-drive, a space-saving solution that influenced all the manufacturers and today is the most popular drive-train layout. The revolutionary design of the Mini was created by Sir Alec Issigonis and he was considered a visionary in industrial transportation. The simplicity along with its diminutive stature made it a hit during the Suez oil crisis.

Still an Iconic car to this day, this car is guaranteed to turn heads and generate smiles wherever you go. Coming out of 4 years of ownership, it's been given extensive attention during restoration, and is now ready to grace the roads once again.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Bob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a big Mini fan, and I've loved bringing this MK1 back to its former glory.

Bob has carried out a restoration on this Mk1, a full respray completed as well has a whole host of mechanical work, the car still features originality though in the shape of interior items. He likes to work on projects and has a the car bug, you might notice the next project he's selling this car to help fund in some of the pictures, a "Big Healey".

Bob found the car listed privately, and he couldn't resist purchasing, planning a list of improvements to bring it up the condition you see it in today. Having completed a little research, he found the original owner purchased this Mini new in 1962 and had it right up until 2002 when the car went to its second owner. This is who Bob purchased the car from in 2017. He'll be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

With that timeless and iconic design, this example in Surf Blue gets the car that little bit of extra attention.

Wheels and Tyres

Currently rolling on some aftermarket wheels, Bob has maintained this little Mini's character during the restoration.

Although the wheels it is currently sitting on appear a little worn and would benefit from a fresh refurb, the car also comes with some original style wheels that have chrome wheel caps and Dunlop SP tyres as pictured in the "Mechanics" section. Bob will only put those on the car for shows! The rubber appears to have a good amount of tread on them, and plenty to enjoy the car to max this summer.

Bodywork

During Bob's ownership, he's attended to any issues and treated the required panels where needed. The bodywork looks generally in great condition all around, Mini's are well known to rust, but this car is in good condition thanks to careful ownership and the restorative work.

We did notice a small chip on the edge of the bonnet and a small dimple on the bottom corner of the driver's door, take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view.

Paint

Finished in "Surf Blue", this car really stands out from the crowd. The paint is even in finish and coat across each panel and really glistens from every angle, Bob having treated the car to a fresh respray during the restoration process.

Please take a look at the photos and videos of the mini's paint for a closer look.

Glass and Trim

The glass is very good throughout with no chips, cracks or damage noted.

The chrome trim looks very good around the car along with the rubber seals that have been replaced.

Interior

An original interior retrimmed to maintain its iconic heritage.

Seats and Carpets

In keeping with the original colour scheme, the interior maintains the car's original character and charm.

The seats feature a blue on grey colour scheme and appear in excellent condition inside the cabin. The carpets also appear in a pale blue and look great throughout.

Dashboard

The dials reflect the originality of this little Mini. The minimal classic Mini gauge sits in the middle of the dashboard, it appears in good condition free from damage, and in line with the age and mileage of the car.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear knob are period items and are in good condition. A sought after "magic wand" gearbox.

Please view the images and videos for a tour of the interior.

Mechanics

A lively little 850cc engine, perfect for pushing the diminutive body and its passengers around the streets.

Engine and Gearbox

As well as cosmetic restoration, Bob has replaced parts in the engine bay where necessary and given the car a good service. The car is powered by a lightweight, 850cc engine ready for zipping around in.

Please take a look at the cold-start video to see Bob starting the car with the choke, letting it come up to temperature, free from any smoke.

Suspension and Brakes

The components and running gear have always been given the attention it deserves throughout its life. Bob reports no issues with the condition of the suspension or brakes and mentions they perform without problems. He replaced some items as part of the restoration as you'll see in the invoice section.

The Drive

A simple and joyful pleasure awaits in Mini ownership, those who have driven a Mini will understand how fun these little pocket rockets can be to drive and work on. Bob reports the car is a delight and is ready for a new owner to enjoy.

Electrics and Other

Simple and minimal electrical features are included in this Mini, Bob reports all the electrics are working well on the car with no faults to report.

History and Paperwork

A charming and desirable home market Mk1, restored in its factory colourway and ready to be enjoyed.

Bob has plenty of receipts and history to go with the car to document the restoration process, along with its Certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust.

The car also comes with original wheels, fitted with Dunlops SP tyres and chrome wheel caps.
